A report 'Empowering You' based on a survey carried out by Ipsos MORI was released on Friday 28 September 2007.

The report called 'Empowering You' is based on a survey carried out by Ipsos MORI for us earlier this year.

It shows public attitudes towards planning ahead in advance of the Mental Capacity Act and illustrates how the Mental Capacity Act safeguards the interests of people who may lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves, now or in the future.

High level statistics in the report reveal that:

  • A majority of people in England and Wales felt it was important that their wishes should be respected with regard to how they themselves and their finances should be looked after - and about who should be able to make these decisions should they lose the mental capacity to do so themselves.
  • However, less than a third said they had thought about and made preparation to ensure that they themselves and their finances would be looked after should they lose the mental capacity to do so themselves.

The report was issued to the media on Friday 28th September as part of the media campaign to increase awareness of the Mental Capacity Act.
